EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROTOCOL – SEVERE WEATHER & TORNADO SAFETY

In light of the tornado that touched down in the Rocky Mountain House area on Saturday, Wilderness Village Resort would like to remind members and guests that we have an Emergency Response Protocol (ERP) in place for severe weather events, including tornado watches and warnings.

All staffed departments have copies of the Emergency Response Protocol and Resort emergency map. We are sharing the camper information and map so everyone can familiarize themselves with the recommended actions and suggested shelter locations before severe weather occurs.

SUGGESTED SAFE BUILDINGS AT THE RESORT

As Wilderness Village Resort does not have buildings with basements, campers who can safely reach a more substantial structure should seek shelter in the nearest available building, including:

• Comfort Stations
• Pit Toilets
• The Lodge
• The Small Maintenance Shop

Once inside, move to the lowest level and a small interior area, away from windows and exterior walls wherever possible. Crouch low and protect your head and neck.

IF A TORNADO WATCH IS ISSUED:
A tornado watch means conditions are favourable for a tornado to develop. Stay weather-aware, monitor alerts and be prepared to act quickly.

• Secure loose outdoor items and awnings, if it is safe to do so.
• Keep your phone charged and monitor official weather alerts.
• Review the attached Resort map and know the closest suggested safe building.
• Keep children and pets close and avoid unnecessary travel around the Resort.
• If you are on the ATV trails or away from your campsite, begin making your way back toward the Resort or a safe, substantial building while conditions still allow.

IF A TORNADO WARNING IS ISSUED OR A TORNADO IS APPROACHING:
Take shelter immediately. Do not wait to see the tornado.

• Go to the nearest suggested safe building identified on the Resort emergency map, if you can safely reach it.
• Once inside, move to the lowest and most interior area available, away from windows and exterior walls. Crouch low and protect your head and neck.
• Do not remain in an RV, trailer, tent or other lightweight structure if safer shelter is accessible.
• If you are outdoors or on the ATV trails and cannot safely reach a substantial building, seek the lowest nearby area or depression, stay away from trees and vehicles where possible, lie flat and protect your head and neck.
• Do not attempt to travel through dangerous conditions to reach a shelter if doing so would put you at greater risk.
• After the storm, remain alert for downed power lines, damaged trees, debris and other hazards, and follow directions from Resort staff or emergency services.

⚠️ Severe weather can develop quickly. Personal preparedness and situational awareness are important. Please take a few minutes to review the attached map and identify the suggested safe building closest to your campsite and the areas you regularly visit.

The Resort's Emergency Response Protocol and emergency map will also be available as a PDF on our website for members and guests to review.

During a severe weather emergency, conditions can change rapidly and communication systems may be disrupted. Always prioritize your immediate safety and follow official emergency alerts whenever available.
